I’ve been reading …
One of the Good Guys, a psychological thriller/feminist fable that is quite timely given all the online conversation we’re having about whether we’d rather find ourselves in the woods with a bear or a man. Cole, this story’s protagonist, is one of the “good” guys. It’s a twisty story told from three characters’ perspectives and, it’s been adapted so well for audio. As far as the themes go, it’s all a bit on the nose. But it works well as a fast-paced-thriller read.
Why We Remember explains the science of memory and, how memory shapes everything from our perceptions of reality, to the choices and plans we make, to the people we interact with, and our identity.
I'm currently reading It Didn’t Start With You, and I'll be finishing it this week. The book explores the science and epigenetics behind generational family trauma and includes exercises that’ll likely force you to really look within and ask yourself some hard questions.
I’ve been watching …
A lot! Critics are saying we don’t have good summer films this year, but I disagree. Summer cinema is low-stakes, silly and fun. So far, I’ve seen Challengers—sexy tennis, terrible ending; Bad Boys: Ride or Die—it was fine, a nice Sunday afternoon film you can chat through; the worst of the four, but I’ll keep watching them. And The Fall Guy—the perfect summer popcorn film noone is talking about. It's fun, action-packed, with insane stunts, a great story, romance, and Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt clearly having the best time ever.
On the TV front, The Boys is back. I'm still unsure how I feel about this show; it’s a dark, dark comedy and often an uncomfortable watch, but the story and characters are so awful yet compelling that I keep coming back. Reality TV has also been delivering. Made In Chelsea just ended, and while I've said I don't watch dating shows, Made In Chelsea is now a dating show about one friendship group. This season focused on the will-they-won't-they dynamic of Ruby and Rez’s ten-year on-and-off relationship. I've learned a lot, mainly that being chummy with your ex is probably a bad idea because this is a hot mess.
I’ve been watching all the Law Roach interviews that appear on my socials since the Met Gala. He’s written a book on confidence and styling, coming out this September that you can preorder.
I’ve been listening …
TEMS’ BORN IN THE WILD ALBUM and it’s making me want to go on holiday.
A stand out episode of Diary of a CEO recently was this one on fertility - delivers on the knowledge and is also a very empathetic conversation.
A few favourites …
I had a fun weekend in Birmingham with my brother, where we saw Romesh Ranganathan live and at Dishoom. It was my first live stand-up show and I had no idea they crack jokes for 2+ hours?! I was getting tired towards the end but I’d go again! You can't go wrong with Dishoom, but the layout of this particular restaurant was lush, designed to make you feel like you're in a cafe in Swadeshi Market.
